Monet, Cézanne, Degas, and Renoir are among the most popular artists in the world. The value of their works and of their contemporaries is estimated at tens of millions of dollars. But who were they really? Why and how did they develop? What is the secret of their continued popularity? The filmmakers had unprecedented access to a comprehensive exhibition that focused on the Impressionist art acquired by Paul Durand-Ruel, a nineteenth century Parisian art collector. In 1886, Durand-Ruel decided to present Impressionist works in New York, and helped establish the trend through his galleries in London, New York and Paris. The film tells his unusual story, interweaved with the story of Impressionism.

This film series is presented in collaboration with the Jerusalem Cinematheque. Through cinematic exploration of the corridors of museums and insights from the world’s leading historians, curators, and art critics, the films take the viewer on fascinating journeys into portrayals of the greatest artists and their work.
