A love story inspired by the lives of Danish artists Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener, The Danish Girl is a period drama set in the early 20th century and based on the novel of the same name. Einar and Gerda Wegener are a married couple, both painters living in Denmark. When Einar models as a woman for one of Gerda’s paintings, his gender identity begins to shift—and their love is put to the test.

Their marriage and artistic partnership evolve as Einar, who later adopts the name Lili, embarks on a groundbreaking journey as one of the first known transgender women.

The film is based on the life of painter Lili Elbe, regarded as the first transgender woman to undergo gender confirmation surgery in the 1930s. Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) received an Oscar nomination for his leading role, while Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. The film was directed by Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech).
