Letter to a Pig / Special event to mark the Holocaust Remembrance Day

Screening of the award-winning film Letter to a Pig by Tal Kantor, and a talk by the filmmaker. This is the first animated film to win the Ophir Award for Best Short Film. In addition to winning more than 50 awards at film festivals in Israel and around the world, it has been nominated for an Oscar in the Best Animated Short Film category—the first time an Israeli film has been nominated for an Oscar in that category.

Letter to a Pig, 2022 | By Tal Kantor, 17 minutes, Hebrew, with Hebrew and English subtitles

A traumatic memory sends a young schoolgirl on an inner journey in search for identity, during which the boundary between the animal and human worlds blurs. On Holocaust Remembrance Day, a Holocaust survivor reads out a letter to a pig that saved his life. A student hears his testimony in class and sinks into a dark dream. In the depths of her subconscious, where the boundaries between the foreign and familiar turn indistinct, she faces profound questions of identity, the transmission of collective trauma, and compassion.

About the lecture
Hybrid Creative Processes: Between Animation, Memory, Reality, and the Subconscious

Tal Kantor, creator of the film Letter to a Pig, will discuss the complex and unconventional process of creating a film that combines abstract ideas and animation—from its development stages to its presentation on screen—in terms of the relationship between form and content, and the unique technique she developed. Additionally, Kantor will discuss how collective trauma is conveyed from a subjective perspective, through a feminist and psychological prism. The lecture will be accompanied by excerpts from the film and the work process behind it.
